DV1 was conceived in 2003 as a new and innovative home entertainment label with the goal of creating and distributing a catalogue of iconic and highly collectable title. Since then it has built a strong catalogue across various genres supplying a diverse collection of documentaries, independent cinema, music, lifestyle and health and fitness titles.

The company has also formed a number of important alliances, most notably with Pay TV arts and entertainment channel Ovation. Under the arrangement, selected programming such as documentaries and live concerts screened on Australia's only subscription-based arts channel will be replicated for DVD distribution through DV1 under the Ovation label. As well as access to the best arts and entertainment programming from around the world, Ovation maintains a strong commitment to local programming, providing DV1 with an eclectic mix of product.

In early 2009 DV1 also announced a new partnership with Rialto Distribution to license a selection of high quality film, documentaries and TV
